LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY TO INCORPORATE COMMUNITY LAW INTO ITS LAW PROGRAMME-DEAN

The study of ECOWAS Community Law will be incorporated into the law curriculum of the Lagos State University in order to improve the knowledge of the students of Community Law and equip them for better practice, particularly in the Court, the Dean of Faculty of Law of the University, Professor Funminiyi Adeleke, has said.

Exchanging views with a delegation of the Court, led by Honorable Justice Dupe Atoki, which was at the university as part of a five-day sensitization programme in the state, the Dean lamented the low level of awareness of the Court among citizens, including experienced legal practitioners and the academia.

He assured the delegation that the University will take steps to acquaint lecturers and students with the Court through lectures and other activities, including internships in the Court. He praised the decision to include students among those to be sensitized during the programme as valuable for the students, particularly for those taking courses in human rights, one of the four mandates of the Court.

In her remarks, Justice Atoki, who represented the Court’s President, Honorable Justice Edward Amoako Asante, expressed optimism that the session with the students will mark a turnaround in their learning experience and help them chart a course for greater heights in their legal career.

She also enjoined them to be dedicated, law-abiding and committed to their studies as these were the elements required for excellence.

Receiving the delegation earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the University Professor, Olanrewaju Fagbohunl, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Damola Oke, had pledged the willingness of the University to collaborate with the Court in improving the knowledge of the law students of international law.

At the sensitization session attended by students and lecturers, Mr Nkeitia Aprakou, Executive Assistant to the President of the Court had presented the overview of the Court, including its history, mandate and competence.

Over 400 hundred people, students and lecturers of the university’s faculty of law attended the session which was part of the 1^st-5^th October campaign of the Court in the State.
